The holiday season is officially here, and Madison is overflowing with music, magic, and memorable moments for families, couples, and anyone who loves a little sparkle this time of year.
As a lifelong lover of the arts, I have to start with one of my favorites: A Christmas Carol, presented by CTM. This incredible production brings fresh, thoughtful touches to the classic story, making it even more engaging for audiences of all ages. It’s the perfect way to kick off your holiday festivities!
Another must-see is the beloved Nutcracker performed by Madison Ballet. I grew up attending this show—and even had many friends who danced in it—so it will always hold a special place in my heart. The music, the costumes, the magic… it’s everything you want from a Christmas tradition.
If you’re headed downtown for a performance, make sure to take the long way and drive through the holiday lights at Olin Park. It’s a simple detour that brings major holiday cheer, especially for little ones in the back seat.
After your show, keep the winter fun going with ice skating at The Edgewater. It’s a family favorite, complete with festive music and gorgeous lakeside views. For the adults, don’t forget to stop by Augie’s Tavern—they’re serving up holiday cocktails and even caroling throughout the season.
Madison has no shortage of seasonal fun, but one of my personal favorite date nights is starting with festive drinks at Lucille, then wandering over to the Capitol to admire the stunning Christmas tree. If your timing is just right, you may even catch Tuba Christmas, a joyful and uniquely Wisconsin tradition.
Wherever you choose to celebrate, Madison truly shines this time of year.
Stay warm, stay merry, and enjoy every bit of the magic our city has to offer!
