Charming Small Townships Around Madison

Charming Small Townships Around Madison

When people think of Dane County, names like Middleton, Verona, and Sun Prairie usually come to mind. But just beyond the bustle of Madison’s suburbs, you’ll find a quintessential collection of small townships and communities with undeniable charm. These spots offer a slower pace of life, rich local character, and hidden gems — not just for living but for eating and gathering. Whether you’re looking to move, exploring the roads less traveled, or simply planning a weekend outing, these townships and their local favorites are worth a spotlight.

Dunn - Tucked along the shores of Lake Waubesa, Dunn is the perfect mix of rural serenity and natural beauty. Locals treasure the quiet farmland views, scenic bike trails, and lake access. A fun fact here is that development is limited to 1 home per 35 acres! This location is ideal for those who want to be close to Madison but crave a countryside lifestyle. Local Favorite Spot: the Squirrel's Nest; a local favorite for breakfast and a bloody mary.

Paoli - This tiny unincorporated village south of Verona feels like something out of a storybook. Known for its artisan shops, galleries, and the iconic Sugar River winding right through town, Paoli is a buzzing hub for creativity and community. With recent development has come several incredible spots: Seven Acre Dairy Company and Paoli Schoolhouse American Bistro; located across the street from each other!

Rutland - South of McFarland and Oregon, Rutland has deep agricultural roots and a welcoming rural feel. You’ll find farm stands in the summer, cozy neighborhood taverns, and plenty of space to spread out. Local Favorite Spot: Madison International Speedway; open for multiple days each week in the summer, where several different classes of racers come to compete! They feature nightly food specials; the nachos are delicious!

These smaller communities around Dane County remind us that not every desirable place to live comes with a big population or a bustling downtown. Many of them offer: rich history, community pride, a close connection to nature, and local gathering spots that reflect the character of the place. Whether you’re dreaming of a hobby farm, an artist’s retreat, or simply a quieter lifestyle near Madison, these townships have something special to offer.
